Founding ML Engineer
Job Description
⁉️ Why ThreadWise
We’re on a mission to fix one of the most broken, overlooked systems in the modern economy: commercial insurance.
It’s a $1T+ industry drowning in complexity—bloated PDFs, outdated workflows, and zero automation. We’re using LLMs, NLP, and intelligent agents to rebuild it from the ground up.
At ThreadWise, you won’t just build—you’ll lead. As an early team member, you’ll shape core tech, define product direction, and help build a company that’s solving real-world problems at scale.
If you’re looking for deep impact, real ownership, and a mission that actually matters—this is your moment.
🚀 Role Summary
As our Founding AI/ML Engineer, you’ll own the design and development of our core machine learning systems—from fine-tuned LLMs to feedback-driven NLP pipelines and intelligent automation.
You’ll work directly with the founders to shape the product, tech, and company from the ground up—and play a key role in turning deep complexity into real-world impact.
If you're energized by ambiguity, love building from scratch, and want to lead with both code and conviction—this role is for you.
🕵️♂️ Who We’re Looking For
This role goes beyond technical chops. We’re looking for someone who is:
- Comfortable with ambiguity. You find clarity in mess and keep momentum even when things are uncertain.
- A strong communicator. You can clearly articulate problems, solutions, and tradeoffs with both technical and non-technical folks.
- Able to push back but commit. You bring opinions and challenge ideas, but once a direction is chosen, you support it fully.
- Humble and self-aware. You know your strengths and your gaps. You're open to learning and not afraid to say "I don't know."
- Outcome-driven. You’re not here to punch a clock — you’re here to make things happen, even if that means late nights and going the extra mile.
⭐️ Ideal Candidate Profile
- NLP & LLM Expertise: Experience fine-tuning LLMs (e.g., OpenAI, Hugging Face models).
- Familiar with transformer architectures, embeddings, and RAG systems.
- Real-World AI Experience: Proven track record of shipping AI/ML systems into production.
- Strong product instincts and ability to work fast with real-world constraints.
- Feedback Loop & Training Architecture: Experience designing training workflows using user feedback or human-in-the-loop processes.
- RPA:Experience with RPA tools or browser automation (e.g., Playwright, Selenium) is a big plus.
- Engineering Foundation: 4+ years of backend, data, or infrastructure development experience.
- Strong in Python; familiarity with JavaScript/React/Node is helpful.
- Startup Mindset: You move fast, learn faster, and aren’t afraid to build with imperfect info.
💰 Compensation, Benefits, and Perks
- Competitive salary ($140k to $170k) and First hire equity
- Unlimited PTO – we trust you to take the time you need
- 100% covered health, dental, and vision insurance
- Full remote flexibility, with occasional in-person sessions in Denver
- The rare opportunity to build the foundation of a company from scratch
- A say in everything—from stack to strategy to snacks
